Scammers pretending to represent Australian Computer Society

There are reports circulating about people phoning computer users claiming to represent the Australian Computer Society (ACS) notifying that their computer had been infected with a virus and offering to repair it for a fee.

The ACS is a professional association and, whilst many IT professionals are members (including myself) the organization itself does not monitor computers nor offer IT support.

If you receive such calls claiming to be from the ACS, from Microsoft or from your Internet provider, you should hand up immediately. Do not give them credit card or bank details, and do not give them access to your computer. As a general rule, you should NEVER give remote access to your computer to anyone you do not personally know.
